Google Celebrates Coming-Out Of ‘Scooby-Doo’s Velma With Pride Easter Egg

Earlier this week, Scooby-Doo’s latest animated film confirmed what fans have been speculating for decades—that Velma Dinkley is gay. 

The new movie, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo, explicitly shows the famed character (voiced by Kate Micucci) crushing on costume designer Coco Diablo (Myrna Velasco). While executives have revealed her sexuality in the past, this is the first time it is portrayed as cannon onscreen. 

To add to the festivities of Velma’s coming out, Google is joining the party with its latest Easter egg. When you look up “Velma,” “Velma Scooby-Doo,” or “Velma Dinkley” on the search engine, you’ll see the results page flooded with lesbian Pride and Progress flags. 

Anthony Irwin, a Senior Interaction Designer at Google, tells Variety that the company feels it would be an “identity-affirming surprise” for fans of the franchise as they have waited so long for Velma to fully embrace her sexuality. 

If you’ve yet to catch the movie in theaters, it will begin streaming on HBO Max from October 15, 2022. 

A special animated prequel series for the bespectacled character, created by Mindy Kaling, is also in the works, and its first sneak peek is expected to be revealed at New York Comic-Con.
