New Yorkers Can Now Choose ‘X’ Gender Marker For Their State IDs

Non-binary or gender-fluid people residing in New York can now opt for an ‘X’ marker instead of the usual gender options on their state identification cards. 

According to CNN, the change comes about as part of the Gender Recognition Act, which was signed into law by the state assembly last year. 

The landmark legislation, which came into effect on June 24 this year and follows the rollout of genderless passports, will see expanded protections set in place for transgender and non-binary New Yorkers—making it easier for people to change their names, sex designations, or birth certificates to better reflect their identity. 

Those who wish to switch the ‘M’ or ‘F’ gender markers over to ‘X’ on their driver’s license, learner permit, or non-driver ID card can do so at all Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) offices within the region, or apply for the change to be made online. 

“Every person, regardless of their gender identity or expression, deserves to have an identity document that reflects who they are. My administration remains committed to ensuring that New York is a place of value, love, and belonging for the LGBTQ+ community,” said Governor Kathy Hochul, who announced the new policy.
