1880s Levi’s Jeans Fetch $76K At Auction, Apparently Still Wearable
One of the most expensive pairs of Levi’s jeans has just been sold at auction for a whopping US$76,000.
The garment in question came from the Gold Rush era, and once belonged to a miner from the Wild West. On the waist of the pants are buttons for suspenders, and specks of white from wax candles can be seen down the legs.
The vintage pants were auctioned off in New Mexico and, according to the Wall Street Journal, are still in “good/wearable” condition.
The item went to a vintage clothes dealer named Kyle Haupert, who is sharing his purchase with Zip Stevenson, the owner of a vintage clothing store called Denim Doctors. The total amount came up to US$84,200 with a buyer’s premium.
Haupert paid for 90% of the bid, and he hopes Stevenson will use his expertise to find the next buyer, according to Insider. He also tells WSJ that the jeans are still acceptable for a trip out to Starbucks, demonstrating how good the quality is still.
