Apple Music has chosen Mercedes-Benz and a select lineup of its cars to be the first-ever third-party brand to host its in-house Dolby Atmos and spatial audio.
The duo will bring the new surround sound to Mercedes-Benz’s beefed-up Burmester audio system. In addition, Universal Music Group will be working with the car company to base its qualification process on the vehicles. As a result, it will soon issue an ‘Approved in a Mercedes-Benz’ stamp of approval.
This new soundscape will be powered by the Burmester 4D audio and will include 31 speakers, six of which are 3D speakers that will cast music from above you in the car. In addition, 18.5-liter subwoofers, two amplifiers, and eight transducers will also be provided in the latest setup. All of this promises to deliver an experience so immersive you might forget you’re sitting in a car and not at a live show.
According to CNET, Benz cites a 2019 IFPI survey demonstrating that 80% of people considered the listening experience in their car to be as important as in their homes. Further research conducted by the company showed that 76% of its users found spatial audio in their vehicles essential.
The audio system will arrive in the limited edition Virgil Abloh Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, as well as its electric car series, Mercedes-EQ EQE, EQE SUV, EQS, and EQS SUV, with other models slated to receive the technology soon.
