Royal Caribbean Docks Into Green Travel With Zero-Emissions Terminal

Royal Caribbean is charting a course toward sustainability with a new zero-emission ship terminal in Galveston, Texas. 
 
The terminal, which the cruise company is calling ‘Destination Net Zero’, will be constructed with materials that cut down on carbon consumption and minimize the heat island effect in Galveston. This area experiences higher temperatures than its surrounding vicinity.
 
Solar panels will also be lining the building to provide what the brand hopes to be 100% self-sufficiency. 
 
According to the company, the structure is currently underway and has managed to divert 75% of its waste from landfills.

Once built, the eco-friendly dock will house 600,000 guests annually, with a space amassing 161,000 square feet.
 
Guests arriving at Galveston will also be provided bicycles and electric charging stations to aid them in getting around the city.

The new green terminal is set to open in November 2022. According to Royal Caribbean, it will be the world’s first LEED Zero Energy facility and the brand’s fourth LEED-certified establishment, behind Terminal A in Port Miami and its Springfield, Oregon dock.
 
On the whole, Royal Caribbean is working towards a larger and more ambitious plan of delivering a completely carbon-zero cruise ship by 2035.
