Harrod’s London Gets Splattered In Orange Paint By Anti-Oil Activists
Climate activism organization Just Stop Oil has carved a name for itself over the last year. The activist group may want to save the earth, but it might need to protect itself first after a stint that has landed some members behind bars.
The protesters initially made a statement by tacking themselves to well-known artwork. Then, they took their campaigns to the streets of London by sitting on the roads. Last week, they again made headlines by tossing some tomato soup on Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers.
Now, they’ve set their sights on a new target: Harrod’s department store.
Early on October 20, people passing by Knightsbridge were treated to an orange spectacle as the front of the building had been haphazardly doused in spray paint.
The department store’s front walls and display windows have been marred to urge British government against producing “new oil and gas.”
According to The Guardian, this marks the 20th straight day of disruption from the organization.
Other members of Just Stop Oil took to glue themselves to the asphalt along Brompton Road, near Harrod’s.
The Guardian notes that the Metropolitan police have confirmed that two people are being arrested for criminal damage. Law enforcers took a further 18 into custody for willful traffic disruption on Brompton Road.
A spokesperson from Just Stop Oil states: “Our government is criminally incompetent and morally bankrupt. They are actively seeking to accelerate fossil fuel production, which will kill millions of people while failing to address the worst cost of living crisis this country has ever seen. Vulnerable people will be freezing to death in their homes this winter while the government refuses to tax the rich and the big energy companies that are profiting from our misery.”
