Purr-Fect Little Site Relaxes Humans & Cats With Feline ‘White Noise’

There’s the impression that felines are always grumpy. While not all kitties are lap cats, there are also the less affectionate ones who are such a delight when they finally give you the time of day. When they purr, it’s the coziest feeling in the world.
Here’s something for the cat lovers who don’t have one, and the pet owners who are contemplating adopting another. “The internet has a cat,” describes Purrli, an artificial sound engine that gives you “your very own virtual cat.”
The website was created by Brussels-based research engineer and sound designer Stéphane Pigeon, who found her email inbox flooded by requests to make a cat sound generator after she started an online background noise engine called myNoise.
“The sound of a purring cat is one of the most comforting sounds available and can help soothe and calm you down when you're feeling stressed,” explains the site. “Naturally, it’s not just the sound that is important, but it's also the presence of the warm cuddly cat. Purrli tries to recreate both the sound and the presence of your very own virtual cat through a custom sound engine modelled after real purrs.”
Purrli is designed to calm your nerves with toggleable purrs, offering settings for the sleepiness, cheerfulness, liveliness, calmness, and distance of cat noises, among other things. You can even adjust the “meow-y” factor of the a-meow-zing ambiant machine to throw in some mews every few minutes.
For best results, the site recommends listening to the purrs with headphones on, or at least with external speakers plugged in.
Listeners have reported that the sounds have been helpful with anxiety relief and stress control, sleep quality, pain management, and more. Best of all, the purrs—even if artificial and personalized to your preferences—are apparently comforting for cats too.
“This setting made our kitten meow when he got close to the computer… He was also purring,” one user writes in the testimonials. “So, I guess this setting is ‘kitten-approved’!”
“I foster kittens sometimes, and I recently got three little fellas without a mother. They were really rowdy… so I decided to play this purring for them,” another notes. “When I came back to check on them, they were all sleeping around the speaker happily purring along with the recording! It really helps calm them down; I play it all the time now.”
