Rimowa’s latest suitcase has traveled where most luggages haven’t. Its destination? the metaverse.
The LVMH-owned luxury suitcase brand has joined hands with Nike-led Web3 creative collective RTFKT to transport exclusive digital assets into collectors’ hands, with a futuristic piece of luggage being the main prize.
The space-age, aluminum carry-all is the reward from a Rimowa x RTFKT digital event featuring 888 NFT suitcases and 2,222 robot worker tokens. To unlock them, the community will have to solve challenges in a hacked Rimowa x RTFKT space station; if successful, they’ll be able to mint their non-fungible tokens.
NFT holders can then redeem one of 888 limited physical suitcases. Straddling between the real and digital worlds, the special-edition luggage pays homage to its mixed roots with pixelated imagery and QR codes, while appearing like the unmistakable Rimowa Original suitcase. It holds a near-field communication chip link for the baggage to be tracked in augmented reality.
Built to weather the physical elements, the grooved suitcase is crafted from Rimowa’s iconic anodized aluminum and is both hardy and lightweight. It is, of course, also well-sized for airplane cabins.
“To enter the metaverse with RTFKT is truly exciting, as it allows us to explore what travel means there,” describes Rimowa’s Chief Marketing Officer Emelie De Vitis in a statement. “It’s a space that takes creativity and collaboration to great heights and offers new ways to engage with different audiences.”
