‘Sensory Nooks’ Give Neurodiverse Individuals A Comforting Sanctuary

Mobile pods have become a thing of the hybrid work era. US-based Nook, however, has a different vision for how they may be used. The company assembles ‘Sensory Nooks’ that serve as safe spaces for users with autism, dyslexia, dementia, ADHD, and other neuro-divergent conditions.
When overstimulated by their surroundings at work and school, individuals can tuck themselves into the acoustically-quiet nooks, which offer solace in the form of cushy seats, a twinkling starry-night wall, interactive light-up tubes, and a scent system.
A fiber-optic carpeted rear wall aims to embrace users in a sense of emotional security with its cozy tactility. Meanwhile, a colored LED ceiling subliminally brightens up moods, and buzzing seats help induce calm.
The startup got its Certified Autism Resource accreditation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), which provides training in regards to autism and other cognitive disorders according to the global standard.
Two Sensory Nooks are located at the Allegiant Stadium, inviting neurodiverse Las Vegas Raiders and their loved ones to huddle up inside.
These sanctuaries are “designed for everyone,” says Nook. Since there’s no one-size-fits-all for inclusive design, the portable resting spots can be adapted to accommodate the needs of their users.
