Netflix Shares Guide For Secret Menu Codes And Why They Exist

Got a ridiculously specific hankering for movies this evening? Netflix probably has a section for it. To date, the streamer says there are over 36,000 hidden category codes waiting to be explored.
If you’re feeling lucky, you could throw seven or eight random digits behind the designated “netflix.com/browse/genre/” address and see where it gets you. But when it’s midday on a Tuesday and you only have capacity for 90-Minute Movies (that’s code 81466194), time is of the essence. Over the years, fans have shared thousands of IDs from Netflix’s secret menu to help you unlock new favorite genres. Now, the company is disclosing some of them—plus a handful of new ones—in a new guide and blog post.
It turns out that while the codes have been an open secret for some time, they’ve been around even longer than you might think—dating back to Netflix’s DVDs-only era.
As per Mary Bertone of the Curation and Taxonomy team at Netflix, the IDs started as branches of a genre tree linking to different types of television series and films. Then, one fan scraped the tree and published the entire list online. To this day, those codes are still in use.
The streaming giant continues to actively grow this lineup. These days, it introduces new themes when the inspiration strikes. A conversation mentioning Noah Centineo of To All the Boys I Loved Before fame, for instance, sparked the ‘Action with a Side of Romance’ (81647318) section, where the Centineo-fronted series The Recruit has a place in.
Fresh themes also spring up during the festivities. One code for ‘Small Town Scares’ (81496215) was introduced near Halloween. There’s also a ‘Twisted Christmas’ (2300975) vertical for those who can’t bear to watch another Hallmark holiday flick.
