Donatello’s Famed ‘David’ Sculpture Heads To UK For The First Time

Undoubtedly one of the most famous sculptures in the world, Donatello’s David is finally making its long-awaited appearance in the United Kingdom, as part of the country’s first exhibit dedicated to the Renaissance maestro. 

The exhibition, Donatello: Sculpting the Renaissance, will be held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, showcasing several of the artist’s most impactful works, and how his lasting legacy has shaped the art world since the 15th century.

Alongside David, other pieces that will go on show include a bust of San Rossore from the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo in Pisa, bronze works from the High Altar of the Basilica of St Anthony in Padua, and the notable sculpture Attis-Amorino from the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence.

In addition, this will be the first time art enthusiasts will be able to see the Ascension with Christ giving the keys to St Peter together with the Madonna of the Clouds from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Desiderio da Settignano’s Panciatichi Madonna.

Interestingly, The Guardian pointed out Donatello had actually created two different David sculptures, one in marble and the other in bronze. The former, which will be the one going on display, was crafted by the artist in his early 20s for the Cathedral of Florence.

“Bringing together objects and narratives never seen before in the UK, the exhibition provides a unique moment to experience, enjoy and—for those less familiar with his work—discover Donatello’s astonishing talents and his wide-ranging impact on Renaissance and later art,” quipped Peta Motture, the exhibition’s Lead Curator.

Donatello: Sculpting the Renaissance will take place from February 11 to June 11, 2023. Tickets are now on sale here at £20 (US$23) each.
