Disney Introduces Its First Plus-Size Heroine Who Dances To Body Positivity
Disney shines a spotlight on body positivity in an episode of its new short film series, Short Circuit, titled Reflect, by introducing its first-ever plus-sized main character, Bianca.
Bianca is a budding ballerina who battles a very prevalent issue in today’s society, body dysmorphia. In the animation, the aspiring ballet dancer is haunted by her own demons who lie in the mirror of her studio. As the plot grows, she discovers ways to break through her reflection and the thoughts swirling in her head about her image.
The introduction of characters with different body types has been a long time coming for the production studio. Back in 2014, according to Independent, over 22,000 signatures were signed on a petition asking for a plus-sized Disney princess.

And in a report via the New York Post, the company has stated that it is heading down a path to bring underrepresented minority groups—such as different racial groups and LGBTQ+ members—to the limelight. Its president of general entertainment content noted that Disney aims to have 50% of its characters be from such groups.
But as with any progressive move, it is bound to be met with naysayers who proclaim otherwise. For example, the same report said that many took to social media to reprimand Disney for promoting obesity and encouraging people to engage in such lifestyles.
However, where there is negativity, there is also an outburst of support, as many applauded the production house for finally depicting a real person who goes through the same struggles as many out there.
