Picasso’s Rare ‘Cut Paper’ Artworks Take Spotlight For Once At New Exhibition
While Pablo Picasso was most known for his abstract paintings, the famed artist actually dabbled in a different practice throughout his career: cut papers.
Now, visitors to the Hammer Museum can finally take a glimpse into this little-known aspect of Picasso’s artistic endeavors, ranging from his first cut papers made at age nine in 1890 through the 1960s, when the artist was still working in his eighties.
According to the museum, although the painter rarely sold or exhibited this segment of his works, he still took care to sign, date, and archive them just like the others, signifying their importance to his overall practice.
Many examples, which were disassembled to be stored away after the artist’s passing, will now be restored to their original 3D forms at the exhibition, with some of Picasso’s most whimsical works on display.
