Volvo Presents Its Latest Flagship SUV With ‘Highest Standard Of Safety Ever’
As part of Volvo’s push towards full electrification by 2030, the automaker has unveiled its latest flagship SUV, the EX90.
The seven-seater vehicle will launch alongside its gas-powered counterpart, the XC90, starting in 2024.
According to the brand, the EX90 will comprise a 111 kWh battery pack to juice up its magnetic electric motors, which boast 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm of torque.
Charging will be a breeze, with the batteries able to power up from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes to travel up to 600 km (373 miles).
A clear highlight of the vehicle is its advanced LiDAR and safe space technology, which the firm says makes it the “highest standard of safety ever.”
Enter the driver understanding system, which comprises two interior sensors and a capacitive steering wheel that transmits information about the person behind the wheel to the car’s algorithm.
It can detect if an individual is distracted or drowsy, and if the vehicle needs to “step in and support.” Additionally, a new occupant sensing system prevents any family member or pet from being left behind, and will alert drivers when they lock up.
There are also advanced exterior radars, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors complete with LiDAR to help the car accurately sense the environment in front of it.
With high-precision estimates of objects in its surroundings, the vehicle will be able to put in place measures to proactively maintain safety margins even if the driver is still unaware.
The brand believes its new technology can help reduce accidents that result in serious injury or death by up to 20%, and will help to avoid millions of accidents over the years.
“We know that distraction and tiredness are facts of life, and that they travel with us. We know that you may not always be at your best, for whatever reason. And in traffic, it takes only a few seconds for the unthinkable to happen,” the brand explained.
“So our aim is to help you be a better driver and reduce the risk of a crash happening.”
