‘Tom And Jerry’ Get Cute Makeovers In Japan For Sweet New Animated Series

Cartoon Network in Japan has swapped out sharp claws for toe-bean paws with a reimagined Tom and Jerry production based on the classic animated show that’s been enticing kids since 1940.
The locally-made anime series won’t be replacing the original, as SoraNews24 reports. Rather, it was released as part of a seven-hour Tom and Jerry marathon on Cheese Day in Japan, which falls on November 11 every year. The special day is observed this month as this was the ideal time of the year to prepare sou, the closest version of cheese that Japanese people enjoyed back in the day.
Cheese, as you know, happens to be Jerry the mouse’s favorite snack, hence the tribute. In the Japanese remake, he stars alongside adorable, doe-eyed versions of Tom the cat and Tuffy Mouse, a gray, diaper-wearing baby mouse who occasionally appears in the American series.

Accordingly, the all-new show recreates the cat-and-mouse chases of the old Tom and Jerry but with a “kawaii” twist. You still get slapstick gags of the characters turning into other objects during their fights, though not to the extent of them being blown up by dynamite and the ilk.
Also, the overhauled Tom and Jerry are all smiles and don’t have the same menacing grins seen in the original toons, indicating that they’re just play-fighting in this version.

For now, there is no word on whether the Japanese version will be available to global audiences, but fans can have a preview of the show below.
