Skittles may resonate with Harry Styles’ (cryptically dirty) lyric, “Tastes like strawberries on a summer evening.” Now, the two unlikely allies have one other thing in common: A distaste for candy-hurling fans.
At the Kia Forum on November 14, Styles was performing his song, Kiwi, when a Skittle went flying toward his eye. The singer tolerated the pain and continued the show, but kept his eye shut for the rest of the time.
Skittles subsequently warned fans on social media: “Don’t think I needed to say this: Please don’t throw Skittles.”
The brand also took out a full-page advertisement on the Los Angeles Times, an allusion to the venue of the incident in Inglewood, California, with a colorful poster reminding audiences to “protect the rainbow” and “taste the rainbow.”
The confectioner didn’t name who it was protecting, but its funky visual of heart-shaped sunglasses—a nod to the shades in Watermelon Sugar—implied enough.
Styles’ presence in pop culture is indisputable, what with his vintage flair and gender-fluid looks. Not sure if Gen Z is reading newspapers, though.
