Soon, bulky speakers in vehicles may be a thing of the past. LG Display has unveiled its new sound technology for automobiles, the Thin Actuator Sound Solution.
Scheduled to come to market in the first half of 2023, the brand is confident the innovation will usher in “a new era of vehicle infotainment,” and for good reason, considering this thin and lightweight option is a stark contrast to the usual large and heavy speakers found in cars.
The slim material—just the size of a passport—makes use of a unique technology that allows the device to vibrate off display panels and other materials within a car to create a rich, immersive sound experience.
Impressively, the panel is only as thick as two coins stacked together, and weighs just 40 grams (0.088 pounds), or 30% of the weight and 10% of the thickness of a conventional car speaker, allowing it to be installed in various parts of a car’s interior for better surround sound.
To make its creation eco-friendly, LG Display took care to exclude any rare earth elements, making it a more sustainable alternative to most speakers currently installed in vehicles.
“We have transformed the conventionally heavy and bulky speaker into a high-quality ‘invisible’ sound solution by using our cutting-edge technology to elevate space, design, and eco-friendly factors and provide a next-level sound experience like none before,” says Yeo Chun-ho, Vice President at LG Display.
