Enjoy A Bird’s-Eye View Of London’s Skyline On Its New Glass Elevator Ride
London is elevating the sightseeing experience with Lift 109, a new attraction it has just opened alongside the newly-renovated Battersea Power Station.
Developed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, the experience promises guests a 360° view of the London skyline through a glass elevator ride, culminating at one of the building’s iconic chimneys.
Aptly, Lift 109 was named as such because it reaches a height of 109 m (357 ft). It’s housed in one of the power station’s remodeled chimneys, which were carefully reconstructed using the original building methods from back in the day.
According to New Atlas, that means the renovation project required 25,000 wheelbarrows of hand-poured concrete and 375 liters (nearly 100 gallons) of paint to build each chimney.
As the publication points out, the experience is akin to a scene in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, where the golden-ticket winners were taken up to the top of a chimney by a glass elevator.
Thankfully, the elevator at Battersea Power Station doesn’t involve any comical tragedies, but rather, it serves up a one-of-a-kind panoramic view of the city from up above.
Visitors will be treated to a mix of traditional and augmented reality (AR) signs throughout the ride, providing more information on the English capital’s iconic landmarks as the elevator makes its ascent.
Calling Lift 109 the “cherry on top of the cake for this regeneration project,” Dan Westley, Leasing Director at Battersea Power Station Development Company, is confident that it will cement the building as “London’s newest visitor destination.”
“This immersive new exhibition and unique viewing platform will attract visitors to the Power Station from across London, the UK, and the rest of the world,” echoes Stephen Flint Wood, Managing Director of Arts & Entertainment Events at IMG.
