The Model 3 sedan may be undergoing a fresh makeover by Tesla in an effort to simplify and cut down on the number of parts needed for production. This new endeavor, codenamed ‘Highland’,was first reported by Reuters, which cited a few members of the company that came forward with information.
This change could see a rework of the car’s exterior and powertrain performance. The report also states that by taking the focus off of different areas, Tesla would potentially be zeroing in on other features that Tesla customers value, including its infotainment system.
On top of this, the project is said to be following the revamped 2021 Model S vehicle. However, it’s unclear if the new and improved Model 3 would also incorporate its sibling’s airplane-style yoke, which has replaced the traditional steering wheel, or if the sedan will house the manufacturer’s next-generation 4680 battery cells.
Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory and its Fremont location will reportedly produce the new versions in the third quarter of 2023.
While all of these changes aid in cutting costs and production complexity, it is still unknown how much Tesla will save. Reuters does note that the company currently makes a profit of US$9,500 for each car sold, but whether the cost-saving strategy will extend to its customers is yet to be seen.
