Apple Music Turns Your Phone Into A Portable Karaoke Machine With New Feature

To all the budding singers out there, look no further than right in your very pocket for your next karaoke session with Apple Music’s incoming Apple Sing.
 
The new update lets users sing along with the tunes on their Apple Music app and replace the lead vocals with their own.
 
To access Apple Sing, users must enter the lyrics view and tap on the microphone button. They will also see a slider that they can use to adjust the volume of the vocals.
 

Unlike real karaoke, which provides instrumental versions of hit songs, Apple is using technology developed for its Noise Cancellation and FaceTime to create an on-device machine learning algorithm that isolates the vocals from the rest of the song. Those wishing to croon along can then decide how loud or soft they want the lead singer to be.

With the vocals shut out, a full party of people will also be able to take up different parts of a song. Background lyrics will be displayed in a smaller font than those for the main vocals.

And to make the experience as close to an actual karaoke session as possible, the app will also tell singers how long to hold onto a note.
 
Those wishing to croon out a duet with their partner can also do so, as the screen will switch between each singer’s parts to make it easier to know when to come in.
 
In addition, Apple’s lyric view is also being upgraded to animate each syllable according to the beat of the music.
 
With all these new upgrades, Apple can’t put all 100 million of its songs through this process. As such, it is only giving 80% of the most-played tunes the karaoke upgrade. The tech giant is placing these into 50 thematic playlists for easy access.
 
Apple Sing will roll out later in December and will be available on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV 4K.
