Apple’s Original Rainbow Logo From One Of Its Stores Goes Up For Auction

A rainbow neon sign from one of Apple’s stores is going up for auction with Sotheby’s, where one lucky bidder will be able to pay homage to the iconic logo by hanging it up in their living room.
 
The second-generation sign once hung in a store between 1976 and 1998. The branding is housed in an acrylic shadow box measuring 36-and-a-half inches wide and 36-and-a-half inches tall.

The rainbow apple was the company’s second symbol following a more intricate illustration of Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. The original included the motto: “Newton… A Mind Forever Voyaging Through Strange Seas of Thought … Alone,” around its border. The tech giant only used this logo briefly before Rob Janoff was commissioned to redesign it into the insignia we know today.
 
Janoff noted that the famous bite demonstrated the scale and set it apart from other fruits like the cherry.
 
Some others have thought it might symbolize mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing who committed suicide by biting into an apple laced with cyanide.
 
Sotheby estimates that the Large Original Neon Apple Sign will fetch between US$10,000 and US$15,000.
