NBC’s peacock is prouder than ever, now that it’s preening feathers which are even more vibrant. For months now, the network has been quietly saturating its commercials with a refreshed logo, astonishing nobody but the most eagle-eyed viewers. To call the gesture peacocking would be an overstatement.
While an announcement is still in order, the broadcaster has confirmed the facelift with NewscastStudio. The look updates Chermayeff & Geismar’s six-feather emblem which represented the National Broadcasting Company’s history of being “proud as a peacock” in its move to color programming. It simplifies the original by removing the white border, wiping off the gloss, and evening out the negative space. Meanwhile, the character’s beak has been extended to look more pronounced.

Evidently, the NBC branding is more vivid. The network explains that it’s adopting this paint job for visual consistency—the hues match the six-dot stack of the wordmark of its streaming service, Peacock (interestingly, Peacock’s branding has no peacock icon but borrows visual elements from the corporate identity).

According to NewscastStudio, NBC began rolling out the refreshed design across pre-Thanksgiving and Christmas promotional programming in the fall. Fans didn’t seem too bothered by the change; in fact, only a few spotted the subtle difference.
A NBC trocou discretamente nos últimos dias, a sua logomarca. A última vez que o símbolo sofreu alterações, foi em 2013. Aos poucos, os pacotes gráficos estão sendo readequados.

In addition, NBC is getting bolder new lettering, with a font called NBC Tinker, that builds cohesion between the visual weight of its typography and feathers.
The network, which did not name which agency it worked with for the revamp, is in the process of fanning out a full and consistent visual identity across its offerings, from NBC News to NBC Sports. Eventually, partners flaunting the peacock feathers will have to move with the flock too.
The full transition is poised for completion in 2023.
