Earlier this week, Donald Trump teased a “major announcement,” which turned out to be the launch of a line of digital trading cards, featuring non-fungible tokens (NFTs) of him drawn in comic style.
Fans who purchased the tokens at US$99 a piece would stand a chance to win a variety of prizes that involved meeting the former President, including a Mar-A-Lago group cocktail hour, a Zoom call, or even a private dinner in Miami.
Of course, the release of the digital trading cards wasn’t without controversy. Gizmodo revealed that several of the clothes Trump dons in the images seemed to have been appropriated from small clothing brands.
Despite that, it seems the former chief’s NFTs have done well among his supporters, considering it completely sold out just a day after its release. Furthermore, the prices of the tokens have soared on secondary markets to over double their original asking price.
According to OpenSea, the collection’s floor price is trading at an estimated 0.19ETH (US$230), a significant jump from its launch price of US$99. Rarer images, such as those that only had one-of-one versions produced, are selling for much higher.
For example, one trading card of Trump dressed up in a Santa hat is currently going for 3.25ETH (US$3,817), while another depicting him holding a flame in front of the Statue of Liberty has been listed at 20ETH (US$23,489).
As reported by CoinDesk, data from Dune Analytics showed that nearly 13,000 users minted an average of 3.5 tokens upon the collection’s release. Not to mention the 115 fans who purchased the set of 45 trading cards for US$4,455—guaranteeing them a ticket to dinner with Trump.
Will the seemingly successful collection spur the business mogul to shift his focus from the presidency to cashing in on virtual tokens? No one’s sure, but as per the BBC, the billionaire said the NFTs were akin to baseball cards, “but hopefully much more exciting.”
