Lionel Messi Scores Instagram Record With Most-Liked Post Ever
A picture posted by Lionel Messi after clinching the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy has become the most-liked post ever on Instagram, amassing over 68 million likes to date. The series of images depicts him lifting the Jules Rimet trophy, and celebrating with the other Argentinian players.
According to PetaPixel, just within a day of uploading the post, the likes it garnered surpassed the previous record holder, @world_record_egg, which had a long run as the social media platform’s most-liked picture with over 57 million likes.
Interestingly, another one of the most popular posts on the network involves Messi, too. A photoshoot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz for Louis Vuitton set the internet ablaze when it featured the World Cup winner alongside fellow soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo.
As per Forbes, Messi’s popularity on Instagram seems to be steadily increasing since the tournament began, with the player gaining an estimated 25.8 million followers within the past 30 days, almost a 200% increase from the previous month.
Thanks to the spike, the maestro is now the second most-followed user on the platform with 405 million followers, overtaking Kylie Jenner but still trailing behind long-term rival Ronaldo at 520 million followers.
Another series of pictures portraying Messi sleeping alongside his World Cup trophy is quickly rising up the Instagram ranks, with over 46 million likes at the moment. Will it overtake the previous collection to become the most-liked post ever? You’ll have to wait and see.
