As Amazon continues its push in Prime Video and offers live sports content, a recent report revealed the retail giant could soon be coming out with its very own standalone application just for sports enthusiasts.
According to The Information, the app—if it ever makes it to the App Store—will help move all of Amazon’s sports content to a single hub, instead of having subscribers sift through its extensive video platform in order to locate live broadcasts.
There have certainly been clues that the company is headed in this direction, with Amazon CEO Andy Jassy calling live sports “a unique asset” for the firm. One of the main developments involved recently securing the exclusive rights to NFL’s Thursday Night Football.
As per TechCrunch, the platform is working on diversifying the types of sports content it offers, ranging from Premier League soccer matches to baseball games, and even by adding complementary original sports talk shows to the mix.
For now, it’s not yet clear if the standalone sports application will ever see the light of day, or if it’ll end up shelved. Though, could separating its sports content from other Prime videos signal a possible additional subscription fee for those who want to watch live playoffs?
Possibly, the publication notes, as live sports broadcasts are infamously costly to secure, so it wouldn’t be all that surprising if a separate application is part of Amazon’s plan to offer a separate subscription fee.
