As Twitter tries to claw its way out of chaos and back into the green, Chief Twit Elon Musk has decided to lift the ban on paid political advertisements, which were stopped in November 2019 following a tumultuous run-up to the 2020 Elections.
“We believe that cause-based advertising can facilitate public conversation around important topics. Today, we’re relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US,” Twitter announced via its Safety account.
At the moment, not much is known about how far the social media network is planning to relax the rules, though this change will bring it closer to the likes of Facebook and YouTube, which have allowed political advertising.
Moving forward, we will align our advertising policy with that of TV and other media outlets. As with all policy changes, we will first ensure that our approach to reviewing and approving content protects people on Twitter. We'll share more details as this work progresses.
In addition, Twitter said that going forward, it would be aligning its advertising policy “with that of TV and other media outlets,” which as Mashable pointed out, is pretty vague.
Nonetheless, the site promised that it will ensure the new “approach to reviewing and approving content protects on Twitter,” though it did not give any additional details on the matter.
In an email to Reuters, Twitter Head of Trust and Safety Ella Irwin explained that “cause-based” advertisements could cover a whole range of issues, from education to voter registration, climate change, or government programs.
Could the change in policy sway advertisers to jump back on board the social media application? If anything, at least the site will drum up interest and conversations about the upcoming 2024 Elections.
