US Congressman To Be Sworn In With Oath On ‘Superman’ Comic

While most politicians who are sworn into Congress decide to take their oath atop a religious text, Robert Garcia’s choosing another type of seminal publication: the first issue of Superman. 

Yup, the soon-to-be Congressman, who recently won a seat in the state of California, has revealed on Twitter the three items he plans to hold underneath the Constitution as he takes his place in the office. 

The former Mayor of Long Beach says the items he has chosen mean a lot to him, and include a picture of his parents, who sadly passed away during the pandemic, his citizenship certificate, and, of course, an original copy of Superman #1.

Garcia obtained the rare copy of the comic from the Library of Congress, worth $5.3 million on the private market, and defended his choice of text by tweeting that “understand who understands comics knows that comics are an essential part of American fiction.” 

“And the lessons learned are invaluable. It’s serious shit,” he concluded. Will we see future Congresspersons swear their oath on the first copy of Spider-Man or the valuable Marvel Comics No. 1? It’s now a possibility.
