Goodyear Tire Crafted From 90% Eco Materials Passes All Tests To Hit The Road

Last year, Goodyear wowed the industry when it debuted a demonstration tire made from 70% sustainable materials, incorporating unexpected ingredients such as soybean oil, rice husk ash, and plastic waste to replace the typical environmentally-harmful materials. 

Now, a year later, the company has presented an upgraded version of the demonstration tire, this time created with 90% sustainable materials, just 10% off its goal of developing a fully eco-friendly tire by the end of the decade. 

The 90% sustainable-material tire is crafted from 17 ingredients across 12 different tire components, using most of the materials present in the previous version, including four different types of carbon black.

Used as a compound reinforcement, the carbon black is produced from greenhouse gases methane and carbon dioxide, plant-based oil, and end-of-life pyrolysis oil feedstocks for a more circular production cycle. 

Impressively, this sustainable tire has passed all of the firm’s internal tests and external regulatory tests for road use, and has shown to have lower rolling resistance when compared to a reference tire made from traditional materials. 

If you’re not clued in on car talk, this simply means that Goodyear’s tire has the additional advantage of saving more fuel throughout the journey, thereby reducing even more of a vehicle’s carbon footprint. 

For now, the 90% sustainable-material tire will not be available on the market just yet, as the firm says it needs to collaborate further with its supply base to be able to scale the production for the specific tire at high volumes.
