Just as the tech sphere is delving into new ways to integrate virtual-reality headsets into our lives, one company has found a way to eliminate the need for wearing them on your head altogether.

Brelyon, a California-based developer of displays and VR gear, is looking at providing an all-new way of experiencing for people who hate the idea of strapping something to their face.

The Brelyon Fusion concept, potentially the world’s largest VR “headset,” sits directly on a user’s desk, where they can have it surround them and display immersive content.

What gets the oversized equipment up and running is a precise wavefront engineering called Ultra Reality that creates a massive view field with true optical depth. The result is a device that can bring you into any world you’re about to traverse without a heavy piece of gear sitting on your face.

Brelyon Fusion has cameras to track your head position and adjust the display accordingly. It also has spatial audio to take the viewing experience to the next level.

According to Barmak Heshmat, the CEO and founder of Brelyon: “Brelyon Fusion allows the blending of light to scale field of view in a new way that achieves multiples of resolution.” He adds that this new take on light-field expansion allows the team to look at light as “LEGO blocks” that can be used to build and create a more immersive screen.

The company asserts that the headset would benefit anyone with a multiscreen setup or gamers who don’t want to be standing around with wires attached to them when they partake in VR.

With that being said, as VR games are often highly interactive and will need you to move around the room to play them, it will be interesting to see how this headset can make accommodations and track body movements without sensors being hooked up to the person.

All in all, Brelyon Fusion is still in the works, and the firm estimates another three to four years of production before it is ready to hit the market.

Until then, take a look at the video below to see how it works.
