Samsung Develops New Washing Systems That Cut Down On Microplastics

When you toss your dirty clothes in the washer, chances are each wash cycle will produce minute shreds of microplastics waste, formed from the friction between the garments and the machine’s tumbler.

Unfortunately, as per Interesting Engineering, these imperceptible particles are often washed out into larger bodies of water through drainage systems, causing widespread pollution that can harm both humans and wildlife.  

To address the issue, Samsung has collaborated with Patagonia for over a year to come up with effective solutions that make the laundry process more environmentally friendly. 

Hailing the new Less Microfiber Cycle and Filter as a “breakthrough in the fight against microplastics,” the Korean electronics giant focused on two areas of the dreaded laundry run. 

First, it created the Less Microfiber Filter, which cuts down on emissions by preventing microplastics from escaping at the end of wash cycles. This can be purchased either with a Samsung washer or separately to be attached to machines from any brand.

Secondly, those with select washing machines will be able to tap on the specialized Less Microfiber Cycle, which cuts emissions by up to 54%. The cycle can now be purchased in Europe, and will soon be rolled out in Korea and the United States.

“Samsung’s latest laundry innovations will make it easier for consumers to reduce environmental waste for years to come,” the brand says. 

In addition, the brand will be releasing 20-year warranties with its forthcoming washers and refrigerators that cover the appliances’ digital inverter technologies, so that consumers can get the most out of their machines’ lifespans.
