Censorship isn’t always a bad thing. After all, there are times when it may not be appropriate to display text, images, or videos of certain scenarios intended for mature audiences. But could the censorship of intimacy be stifling the “endless exploration of pleasure?”
That’s what condom brand SKYN aims to address in its latest campaign, created in collaboration with creative agency Sid Lee Paris. It hopes to tackle the issue of censorship in the media, which has seen brands and influencers receive the dreaded ban for discussing their sexuality online.
To get its message across, the company decided to tap on one of the most iconic graphic representations of censorship: the blurred rectangle. Instead of just bleeping out the bits unfit for the screen, the brand utilized it as a platform to showcase its products.
As LBB Online points out, this could be a smart move, as with censorship usually comes curiosity, and the use of the well-known blurred rectangle could incite customers to think about what’s really happening in the scene, and how the product featured plays its part.
Creative Directors Céline and Clément Mornet-Landa explain they feel the topics of pleasure and sexuality are still heavily censored by social media, which “isn’t conducive” to educating individuals or opening up dialogues.
Thus, inspired by the banned images on social media, the duo wanted to tap into censorship’s own motif to talk about what intimacy means for the brand, and spark curiosity in conversations that might previously have been stopped.
Rather than just being crude or vulgar for the sake of it, the company’s spot wants to pique viewers’ interest through the sensual scenes, giving off an intimate, homemade expression that makes them all the more curious about the brand and its products.
