Carhartt first cropped up onto the scene with its comfortable and durable workwear designed to withstand the harsh elements. Its ethos is now being pushed to the limit by one company, which is taking these beloved hoodies and transforming them into subtle protective wear.

Bulletproof Everyone, a Washington-based company that takes everyday clothes and turns them into bulletproof gear, has taken two of the brand’s most popular items to upgrade into the ultimate safety wear.

The first is the Armored Carhartt Hoodie, a 10.5oz cotton-poly blend pullover with a three-piece hood drawcord closure and the Carhartt logo stitched onto the hand warmer pocket. It may look and have the same stylings as something you would buy directly from the Carhartt, but this particular hoodie hides a 12-inch by 6-inch ballistic panel in the front and the back of the clothing to protect the wearer’s most vital organs.

According to Bulletproof Everyone, it has Level IIIA protection against .22LR, .380, 9MM, .40, .45 ACP, .356, and .44 Magnum rounds. Moreover, it does well in combat with knives as it withstands slashes and stabs.

These plates are embedded into the pullover via a polyester poplin outer layer with a 600 denier coated nylon inner cover that can also offer protection from UV rays and the rain outside of bullets.

The same treatment is also seen on Carhartt’s Rain Defender DWR zip-up jacket that was initially meant to protect its user from the elements, but it has now also been taken to defend them against danger. The zip-up has the same Level IIIA ballistic panels as the hoodie and can save its user from the same ammo.

In today’s climate, such initiatives can go to great lengths to protect everyday people going about their lives, providing life-saving clothing that is stylish and current. However, has it reached a point where people must go to such lengths to protect themselves that ballistic panels have to be hidden in Carhartt hoodies?

If you’re looking for extra protection, the garments are available in navy blue, grey, OD green, and black and are priced at US$469 for the hoodie and US$499 for the zip-up jacket.
