Meta recently announced that it is rolling out a new feature for Instagram dubbed ‘Quiet Mode’, which, as its name implies, hopes to help users turn off distractions and focus better when they’re trying to be productive.
If you’re at work, studying for a test, or simply need a break from social media, just enable the option for all notifications to be paused. Followers who visit your profile will see that you’re “in quiet mode,” and all direct messages will receive an auto-reply telling them such.
For those worried they might lose track of what’s going on online, Instagram has built in a summary of notifications that appears once the feature is switched off, so you can catch up and remain up to date.
The popular social media platform says the new tool was launched to “help people focus and to encourage people to set boundaries with their friends and followers.” In particular, teens have indicated they’d like more time for themselves in school and at night.
While the feature is now available to all users in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, teens will get an additional prompt to switch it on when they spend a specific amount of time on the network late at night. The tool will roll out to more countries soon.
Alongside ‘Quiet Mode’, Instagram has released updates to give users more control over the content that appears on their feeds. Now, you can choose to hide multiple pieces of content in the Explore page that you aren’t interested in with just one click.
Furthermore, users can hide posts containing specific words from recommendations—be it a word, list of words, emojis, or hashtags. For example, if you decide to hide “recipes,” all posts containing that word will no longer pop up on your feed.
