Dictionary Merriam-Webster Takes Over Supercharged ‘Wordle’ Clone, ‘Quordle’

What happens when you cross a famed online dictionary and a popular word game? We’ll soon find out, as Merriam-Webster, the subsidiary of Encyclopedia Britannica, has officially acquired the Wordle clone. 

“I’m delighted to announce that Quordle was acquired by Merriam-Webster! I can’t think of a better home for this game. Lots of new features and fun to come, so stay tuned!” says the game’s creator, Freddie Meyer. 

For the unfamiliar, Quordle is one of the many Wordle knock-offs that flooded the internet while it took over popular culture by storm during the pandemic. It’s one of the few iterations that has still survived, and is a trickier version of the original. 

Instead of just one five-letter word, players are tasked with guessing four terms at once, with just nine tries for them all. To make things even more challenging, each guess applies to all four words. 

As per Engadget, there have been complaints about Quordle reusing answers, with some words even featuring on the game two days in a row. Now that it’s been acquired by a literal dictionary, perhaps players will have their work cut out for them.
