Most people would be familiar with Roman numerals up to 10, but then it starts to get murky. As LBB Online notes, the numeric symbols have essentially been obsolete since the 13th century, so why does the Super Bowl keep using them year after year?
To push back against the confusing issue, Heinz is using its iconic ’57’ number—which happens to match this year’s LVIIth (57th) game—to provide clarity to consumers in an LVII Means 57 campaign, standing with fans to switch from dusty, old numerals to today’s equivalent.
This isn’t the first time viewers have complained about the Big Game’s insistence on using hard-to-decipher numbers, with hundreds reportedly taking to social media to share their frustration during the match, as per the brand.
Now, they can put their voices to good use at Heinz’s special website that allows fans to vote on if the time has come for Roman numerals to be retired for good. The condiment maker is also welcoming opinions on the matter with the hashtag #LVIIMeanz57.
Of course, no Heinz campaign will be complete without its famed ketchup. As such, the brand is launching limited-edition, specialty-labeled bottles, with ‘LVII Meanz 57’ printed at the exact spot where the ’57’ has stood for over a century.
