It’s perfectly round. It’s perfectly red. No, it’s not an apple. It’s Comic Relief’s new red nose, designed by none other than former Apple design legend Sir Jony Ive and his independent creative studio, Lovefrom.
This nose job is the “most dramatic makeover” that the iconic red feature has received since its debut in 1988, notes the BBC’s Newsround. 95% of its construction is made up of plant-based materials. It’s also compact and foldable, so it won’t look too clownish on your table.
The new nose has a paper design that begins as a flat crescent, and it unfolds into a honeycomb sphere to reveal its true form factor.
To unveil the fresh design, the Comic Relief charity has released a promotional video narrated by comedian Diane Morgan.
In true Apple fashion, Morgan hypes up the red nose by highlighting its simplicity and perfect roundness.
“People argue who designed the world, but one thing is very clear—that it is round,” she starts off. “And a perfect circle is the perfect design.”
Morgan continues: “For years, we waited for a new perfectly round thing. Today, the wait is over. It is much smaller than the world. It is much redder than the world. But it changes the world.”
She goes on to describe it as “the most perfect nose in history.”
Comic Relief aims to provide aid to vulnerable people in the UK and the world’s least-developed countries by gathering the spheres of comedy, entertainment, and sport to raise funds. Each year, it celebrates Red Nose Day “to end the cycle of child poverty and ensure a healthy future for all children… through the power of entertainment.”
Ive, often credited as an integral force behind the iPod, iMac, iPhone, MacBook, and Apple’s retail stores, expresses that his firm is proud to be involved in the project, having grown up with Comic Relief.
“This new and seemingly simple Red Nose has been a fabulously complex little object to design and make and has involved our entire team,” Ive elaborates. “We hope it brings a little moment of joy to everyone who wears one.”
The new bioplastic nose is being listed on Amazon UK, ahead of Red Nose Day on March 17. Donations are welcome via Amazon Pay, with 100% of proceeds being forwarded to address the facets of the cost-of-living crisis, like homelessness, food poverty, and mental health issues.
