Viewers Freak Out Over TVs Being ‘Hacked,’ But It Turns Out To Be Just An Ad

Super Bowl fans tuned in this past Sunday to watch the year’s most anticipated game (and to see Rihanna deliver one of her best performances while pregnant!). But just as the game was ending, everyone’s television mysteriously switched over to the Tubi app and had fans everywhere asking the same question: “Is someone sitting on the remote?!”

The advertisement began with commentators Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olson reviewing the game before the bottom of the screen pulled up the app library and selected Tubi. It then “switched” to the video and began scrolling through movies and shows.

The cleverly-placed spot had people scrambling to find the remote and arguing with their friends and families as they tried to figure out what was happening, before they realized they were being bamboozled by the streaming app. And, of course, you don’t mess with sports fans while they’re watching a game. Ever.

Many on social media expressed outrage and confusion, while others admitted to being bested and that the advertisement did a good job of snatching their attention away from the game.

The Super Bowl is when advertisers pull out all the stops as America tunes in to watch the big game. Tubi’s advertisement did stir up some annoyance, with some fans proclaiming that the streaming site should be sued for “disrupting” and “tricking” the audience—but then again, any press is good press, right?
