Burberry is making a list and checking it twice: The company is bringing plaid back, and making it bigger and bolder, under the vision of its all-new creative director Daniel Lee.
The luxury house teased earlier that, for its next era, it would return to its British roots, throwing in a few hints in the form of a revived ‘Equestrian Knight’ (who went on a hiatus for about five years) and a new-old Burberry wordmark. All was revealed at Lee’s debut Burberry show at London Fashion Week as models took to the runway in colorful interpretations of the Burberry Check.
A Fall/Winter showcase was the perfect way to introduce Lee’s ideas for the brand, as you got to see them first in Burberry’s quintessential trench coats. The label’s British heritage design codes are honored and refreshed with vivid colorways like purple, yellow, emerald, magenta, and red—a departure from its classic neutrals—across contemporary, utilitarian silhouettes.
In his previous professional life, Lee helped launch Bottega Veneta’s handbags into coveted luxury statements. Burberry might get a dose of this magic, too. After all, as the F/W fashion show has proven, these definitely aren’t your grandma’s plaids!
