Soon, electric vehicles will be able to eat fresh, sort of.
Subway has unwrapped plans to install EV charging parks at select restaurants in the US, enabling both drivers and cars to get a well-needed pick-me-up before they hit the road again.
Called ’Subway Oasis’, these kiosks will include canopies with several charging ports, picnic tables, Wi-Fi connectivity, green space, playgrounds, and restrooms. Helping the sandwich chain source the right ingredients for electric cars are charging solutions provider GenZ EV Solution and EV charging network RED E Charging.
As part of the initiative, Subway also intends to build smaller fast-charging stations at new or freshly-revamped locations. The smaller-scale outlets are said to be able to offer a 120-mile charge within 17 minutes for around US$20.
Guests who use the EV chargers could also be entitled to exclusive discounts, a perk that Subway is considering.
The company details that the new facilities won’t just make life breezier for those on the go, but they could also generate extra income for franchisees.
“We’re constantly exploring new ways to innovate and exceed our guests’ expectations for a high-quality, convenient experience,” describes Mike Kappitt, chief operating and insights officer of Subway.
Kappitt adds that the venture would be “a win for our guests, our franchisees, and our planet, creating a dedicated space for drivers to charge their vehicle while enjoying their favorite Subway sandwich.”
“Equitable access to charging is essential to the adoption of EVs in the future,” notes Jose Valls, CEO of GenZ EV Solutions, who says that Subway’s role in democratizing EV charging will affect “millions of Americans.”
The first of the Subway Oasis spots should arrive later this year.
