Casio Reissues The First G-Shock—Dialed Up With Upgrades—For Brand’s Anniversary

In 1983, Casio debuted its first G-Shock watch, which would become one of the staples in the timepiece sphere. Its design was utilitarian, but there was an edge to it that made it ripe for streetwear and even formalwear, thanks to its status in the fashion world later on.
 
4o years on, and the brand is ready to give it some upgrades for the anniversary.
 
The new GW5000U-1 is a re-issue of the original DW5000 but now comes with a few modern updates. This version hosts a stainless steel screw-back that can protect its steel core. The first iteration used a resin backing, making it less resistant to wear and tear. Meanwhile, the updated 42.8mm case, also composed of solid stainless steel, increases durability.

Casio’s initial variant could withstand water of up to 328 feet. While impressive for its time, technology has undoubtedly allowed watches to handle a little more than that. The re-issued version can now go up to over 600 feet underwater.
 
Regarding its accuracy, it has a Multi-Band 6, which provides radio-controlled time adjustments from six frequencies worldwide.
 
Casio’s updated watch is now available on its website for US$300.
