Unsold Persimmons Escape The Pits As Fruit Leather For Clothes & Bags

Soft, sweet, delicious persimmons have a second lease on life as fruit leather, an alternative to the traditional stuff.
 
PersiSKIN is taking waste created from the fruit and transforming it into this eco-conscious alternative that gives customers an animal-friendly option.
 
The company started in Valencia, Spain, in a region that produces 85% of the country’s harvest, or over 600 million pounds yearly. With that comes a substantial surplus that is not sold through the year. According to the company, about 50% of persimmon production does not reach the market.
 
So what to do with all the leftovers? Turn them into fashionable bags, of course.

 
In order to come up with the proper production process, it took PersiSKIN three years to develop in the Science Park of the University of Valencia. After that, the team worked on recreating the ideal alternative to leather that looked and felt just as it did.
 
It was left with fruit leather made from 85% natural materials. This number changes based on the finishing applications used for each textile’s performance.

According to PersiSKIN, the leather can be used for clothing, accessories, and upholstery.
