This ‘Living’ Plant Chair Is Purposefully Designed To Be Built, Not Bought

It’s no secret house plants are having their moment, with Garden Pals reporting that seven in 10 millennials call themselves “plant parents.” No doubt thanks to the pandemic, demand for potted plants has risen by 18%, with 66% of American households owning at least one house plant.

To make these leafy companions more useful, the European DIY chain Hornbach has come up with the ‘Green Hideaway’, the latest addition to its Werkstück series that merges a classic Swedish chair design with greenery.

Created in collaboration with creative agency HeimatTBWA\ and design duo Front/, the idea was based on the clean, minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic while being heavily inspired by nature.

The best part? Anyone can recreate this slice of woodlands right in their homes just with the help of a template and materials available in Hornbach stores—meant to show that designer items don’t always have to be bought, but can be built.

“The idea behind the Werkstück series is to democratize great design… in 2023, we think it’s very interesting to use design as a tool to improve people’s daily lives,” quipped Guido Heffels, Leading Creative for Hornbach.

In addition, the ‘Green Hideaway’ will evolve over time as the wood ages and the plants grow, so no piece will look the same. The chair provides users with a green reprieve even in urban, high-rise buildings, so you feel like you’re at one with the great outdoors.

As the company noted, apart from its aesthetic appeal, the seat boasts undeniable health benefits as well. Researchers at Cardiff University found that houseplants not only improve the quality of air in a home but can also increase productivity and concentration—allowing you to get more done when you’re seated on the leafy throne.

“In Sweden, nature is so much part of our lives, it’s like the forest is our second living room. But the modern world pulls people away from contact with nature. The ‘Green Hideaway’ is our antidote to this,” explained Front/ co-founder Anna Lindgren.
