Symbolic of a new era, the Royal Mail has unveiled the final special stamp collection marked with the head of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The 12 designs, commemorating the centenary of the historical Flying Scotsman steam locomotive, depicts the train against backdrops of North Yorkshire, Northumberland, Berwick-on-Tweed, and Victoria Station in London.
The Queen’s silhouette, depicting the late monarch in her 20s, has been a defining feature on special stamps since 1968. Her Majesty has appeared on limited editions including the pop culture-heavy Star Trek, Sherlock Holmes, and X-Men collections.
As noted by the BBC, these selections are planned way in advance. The Flying Scotsman series, in fact, had been in the pipelines before the Queen’s death in September.
Again, these will be the last commemorative stamps with the former monarch’s head. However, existing stocks will still be on sale until they run out.
Queen Elizabeth II’s son and successor, King Charles III, will be next to appear on special stamps issued by the Royal Mail. The first of the new-era designs should roll out in the coming months.
