Coffee Beans & Plastic Waste Revive An Iconic Chair From The 50s

In 1958, architects Børge Mogensen and Esben Klint created the Conscious Chair, a minimalistic design punctuated with sturdy-looking wood that could fit any setting.

Mater Design has taken this classic silhouette and introduced a newly remastered version for the eco-conscious future, using coffee bean shells and recycled plastic as part of the production process.

Coffee bean shells extracted from the roasting process are turned into a fiber, and to bind it all together is recycled plastic waste. The result is a new type of hybrid material known as ‘Matek’, which is then mixed with wood to make up the chair.

According to Yanko Design, Mater Design can capture carbon in its furniture by turning waste into classic pieces. The collection includes side and dining tables and an upholstered chair featuring recycled wool.

The chair has been relaunched in six different variations in three natural tones—wood waste gray, coffee waste light, and black—and as the company notes, it’s the first time a Mogensen Klint design has been relaunched.

The chairs offer a modern take on a classic piece, and if you feel your home is missing just that, they can be found online for €478 (US$506.30).
