Apple’s Clean Charging Might Be Why Your iPhone Is Taking So Long To Power Up
In October last year, Apple released a new feature that uses clean energy to juice up its phones would arrive in iOS 16.1. However, you might not have noticed it on your phone as the company has toggled it on by default. Many didn’t even know it existed—despite Apple announcing such a feature was soon to come to its devices in September 2022—until people took to social media to complain about longer charging times.
When your phone is hooked to a charger, the new eco-conscious system will look for power sourced from solar panels and wind farms. And when that is not available, it will search for energy grids that produce the least carbon emissions.
However, this will only apply for long charging sessions, such as when someone plugs their phone in while sleeping or working at their desk. A user must also be in a Significant Location for an extended period before the feature begins. So if your charging habits vary from day to day or if you travel a lot, you likely won’t be affected by the changes.
This hasn’t stopped people from complaining that their devices now take longer to power up than before. AppleInsider notes that clean charging doesn’t make waiting times longer. According to Fox Business, others have taken to social media to share their disapproval of Apple turning it on by default without letting them know about it.

For now, the feature seems to only be available in the US, If you want to opt out of it, you can find the toggle in Settings under the Battery Health and Charging section.
