Modular ‘Spine’ Chair Lets You Adapt Your Seat To Any Work Environment
While you might be used to desks that can go from sitting to standing height with a push of a button, what about its partner—the chair? Swedish furniture manufacturer Savo has set out to address this issue by launching Spine, a new seating platform that can be adapted to any environment.
Collaborating with design firm From Us With Love, the company wanted to create a desk chair that would blur the lines between product design and flexibility within an office setting, touching on the idea of furniture that could be updated, modified, and rebuilt as workplaces changed.
The answer: ‘Spine’, a chair that acts more akin to a backbone that provides users with infinitely variable settings. One can remove or add as many backrests and headrests as desired, using the spines as a starting platform to customize the most comfortable seat.
As John Löfgren, Creative Director at From Us With Love, explained, the special, customizable chair breaks away from the conventional image of office furniture, and allows users to present their personalities with six different versions to choose from.
More importantly, the chair is meant to be flexible and mobile, so it can be taken apart and put back together in a completely different alignment over and over again, depending if an individual is working at an assigned desk or needs to sit in on a meeting over in the break room.
“Instead of developing yet another chair, we combined our collective knowledge with Savo’s design philosophy and created a platform that meets the need for seating that can be tailored to suit changable environments,” explained Craig Howarth, Chief Commercial Officer at Savo.
“Tomorrow’s workplace will be even more adapatable, and Spine raises flexibility to a whole new level and makes hybrid furniture a reality,” he added. The design will be available for purchase from this month.
