Content creators on TikTok will now be able to put exclusive posts behind a paywall, allowing them an avenue to monetize their efforts. At the moment, the ‘Series’ feature is only available to select users, but applications will open for others to join in the coming months.
Simply put, this function will allow creators to post collections of content that fans can purchase to view. Each ‘Series’ can host up to 80 videos, with TikTok extending the time limit for these paid-for clips to 20 minutes long.
As TechCrunch noted, videos are currently limited to 10 minutes worth of content, so by doubling the duration of premium clips, creators could find more time to delve into topics or demonstrations with cooking, beauty tutorials, or even educational content.
CNBC pointed out that this could sway content creators from other sites, such as YouTube, to move long-form videos to TikTok. However, similarly to the former, creators will not be allowed to post adult content, and all videos must continue to adhere to its Community Guidelines.
The price for each ‘Series’ will be set by the creators themselves, and users will be able to pay through direct in-video links or via the profile page. Interestingly, TikTok told the publication that users will get to keep 100% of profits (after fees) for a limited time.
“Through Series, creators can build even stronger relationships with their viewers while also giving viewers another way to support creators,” the company said in a statement. Take a look at how the new feature works below.
