‘Paint’ Trailer Introduces Owen Wilson As A Knockoff Of A Familiar TV Painter

The joy of painting of a familiar-looking artist is in peril in the forthcoming comedy film, Paint, directed by Brit McAdams.
Its official trailer, released on Tuesday, presents Owen Wilson as an iconic, afroed public television painter named Carl Nargle, who believes he has it all—until a younger artist, Ambrosia (Ciara Renée), enters the scene with her own show and “takes paint to a whole new place.”
Despite the unmistakable appearance, artistic flair, and soothing voice, Carl is only loosely based on Bob Ross, the beloved late celebrity painter known for his happy little brushstroke trees. For one, Carl lives in Vermont, not Florida.
A Bob Ross knockoff is only one of the reasons audiences might be eager to swirl with Paint. In 2010, the film’s screenplay was recognized in the Black List, a prolific ranking of remarkable scripts that have yet to be brought to life.
Paint will saturate silver screens on April 7. Watch its trailer below.
