Porsche Puts Its Touches On Airstream Travel Trailer That Comes With Popup Roof

Airstream recently unveiled its latest travel trailer concept, created in collaboration with the minds over at Porsche “for a new world of outdoor adventure.” The trailer, which is meant to be pulled along by an SUV or electric vehicle, could inspire campers of the future.

This isn’t the first time the trailer maker is dipping its toe into the world of electric vehicles, as Car and Driver pointed out that the company previously came up with the eStream concept, which featured a separate electric powertrain that could help the camper move on its own.

While the newest design doesn’t come with such a powertrain, the concept is the first “garageable” in the firm’s 90-year history. Perfect for families, an automatic suspension in the trailer’s chassis allows for it to be lowered to fit in most home garages.

On the road, the concept boasts improved aerodynamics, including a new rear shape that aids in shedding air. Together with a flush underside that minimizes friction, the aforementioned automatic suspension can be adjusted to reduce drag.

In addition, by using carbon fiber in certain components, the camper is lighter than its predecessors, making it an ideal fit to be towed by smaller internal combustion engines (ICE) or electric vehicles (EVs).

Within the camper, the interior design focuses on maximizing space and creating a feeling of spaciousness that blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors. Apart from large windows and skylights, users can choose to open up the drop-down tailgate to merge into the surroundings.

Car and Driver noted that the trailer comes with smart, modern features, such as a swivel door for the bathroom to save space, a two-burner cooktop and integrated sink in the kitchenette, and a flip-up countertop extender that can be used when dining.

Last but not least, the trailer features an insulated pop-top roof that can be activated when parked, so users can enjoy more headroom within the vehicle to move around and relax. The rear seating area can also be transformed into a working space or sleeping area when it’s time to nap.

It’s uncertain if this concept trailer will ever be manufactured at scale, but there’s no doubt many camper enthusiasts would love to have this in their garage.
