Take A Look At Potential Designs For The New Hollywood Burbank Airport Terminal

As the Hollywood Burbank Airport in Burbank, California prepares for a spanking new terminal, the public recently was awarded the first glimpse into the possible designs for the forthcoming addition.

Three concept designs are being considered for the project, known as Elevate BUR, of which one will be chosen to replace the current terminal. According to The Architect’s Newspaper, the upgraded site will be built to meet new seismic and safety standards.

Dubbed Century, Icon, and Paseo, the three designs will cover 355,000 square feet worth of airport space, with a total of 14 gates. Each rendering showcases the design’s unique reimagination of the entry, gate lounges, baggage claim, and post-security spaces.

As the publication noted, the three chosen concepts do not follow the current Spanish-revival aesthetic that graced the airport when it opened in 1930.

Century

Century takes on a midcentury modern vibe, featuring a brand-new entryway with a series of flattened roof panels covered by glass. The design uses warm wood paneling for the walls and ceilings at the gates and baggage claim areas, together with iconic midcentury furniture like brown leather seating.

Icon

Icon, on the other hand, is said to be inspired by the “glitz and glamor of Hollywood,” and imagines the airport as a low-lying structure with a roof resembling a single wing. Inside, the concourse is filled with silver screen panels and metal columns that differ greatly from how the interior currently looks. 

Paseo

The final concept, Paseo, brings forth a more “human scale” design, with greenery furnishing the large plaza at the terminal’s entrance. The structure makes use of glass and white rectangular shapes to create a simple look, with more focus given to the outdoors via the inclusion of trees and the play of light and shadow.

As per My Burbank, members of the public will be able to see the renderings up close in the Burbank City Hall rotunda and can scan a QR code to give feedback as to which concept they liked the best. The final design will be selected on April 17, 2023.
